Lawyers often work with clients, colleagues, and opposing counsel who are navigating some of the hardest moments of their lives, and that pressure can surface as conflict, stress, and difficult behavior that threatens both effective case management and lawyer well-being.

In this practical session, lawyer, author, and mindfulness teacher, Claire E. Parsons, will offer mindfulness- and compassion-based strategies—grounded in professional responsibility—to help legal professionals stay steady and effective in high-conflict matters while remembering they are not alone in these challenges.

Learning Objectives include:

  • Review ethical obligations for attorneys under Model Rules 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 3.1, 3.4, 8.3, and 8.4, including the role of mental health management and self-care in competently guiding clients through high-conflict situations;
  • Identify common reasons difficult relationships and adverse behaviors arise in legal matters;
  • Explore signs that action may be needed to bring stability to oneself and one’s relationships while navigating conflict;
  • Discuss how mindfulness and compassion can support stability in law practice;
  • Identify practical approaches to improve communication, increase focus on relevant issues, and navigate or resolve disputes even when relationships with opposing counsel or others are strained.
