An overview of the regulatory framework around the globe for the development of artificial intelligence technology. In April 2019, the European Commission issued guidance on the ethical issues arising from human interaction with artificial intelligence applications. Among others, the Commission's guidance highlights the importance of notice that one is interacting with an artificial intelligence application. The Commission also touched on the ethical implications of autonomous weapons systems and systematic discrimination and noted the importance of oversight for artificial intelligence decision-making. The technology sector has also made some attempts to identify appropriate limits on artificial intelligence applications. The rules for the deployment of artificial intelligence are being written now and anyone with an interest in regulation of this technology in the private and public sectors should pay close attention to new developments in this area.
