How often do we still hear that the attorney who is a woman is at fault because she speaks too low (she isn’t being heard) or she is too strident and shrill (she raises her voice)? In contrast, the attorney who is a man is in command and is assertive. Misunderstandings such as these in the courtroom, among law colleagues or with clients, can affect a woman attorney’s legal successes and results and can impact business development opportunities. Join Andrea Kramer, a partner in McDermott Will & Emery LLP, and a frequent speaker on improving gender diversity, as she teaches all attorneys to understand the differences in gender communication styles and offers techniques that women attorneys can use to become more effective communicators, and to maximize their business development potential, whether with existing or new clients or within their own firms. Among other things, our presenter offers tips to help all attorneys: • understand those behaviors that can be misunderstood by people with a gender bias • recognize offensive tactics and how to combat them • understand social perceptions and communication styles • anticipate and react to different negotiating styles Ms. Kramer also provides women attorneys with specific suggestions and techniques, including how to: • say what she needs to say, when she needs to say it, in a way that means she will be heard – and understood • defend herself from verbal terrorists (those toxic clients and colleagues who use offensive tactics) • build long lasting client relationships and generate new clients and projects • lead others with confidence, authority and ease • manage teams and deal effectively with conflicts
