After two decades of no commercial supersonic passenger transportation, airlines are now contracting to buy new supersonic jets and seeking to reintroduce supersonic passenger air transportation by the end of this decade. However, serious regulatory obstacles remain. Among other things, due to the noise they generate, supersonic jets currently are not allowed to fly over land in the United States. It will take considerable regulatory efforts to achieve the goal of a renaissance in supersonic air travel and airlines and manufacturers who make the right regulatory choices could obtain a material competitive advantage in the marketplace.
