It is important to understand the history of cannabis if you are going to practice law or operate a business in the industry. While many people think of cannabis as a new and exciting plant that will get them rich quickly, it has actually been used for thousands of years around the world. Cannabis has been an important part of industry, medicine, and spirituality since its existence. The evolution of conflicting federal and state marijuana regulations throughout the nation’s history creates several complications for operators working in this industry today. Because federal and state laws conflict, it is critical for any cannabis attorney and any cannabis operator to stay abreast of all current cannabis laws and any policy that may become enacted.

The goals of this course are to (1) have a deeper understanding about the history of cannabis; (2) recognize how conflicting federal and state law creates several issues in the marijuana industry; (3) learn about the creation of state marijuana industries; and (4) acknowledge the importance of keeping up-to-date with the latest regulations and pending legislation.
