The use of open source software has become ubiquitous within most enterprises. Any attorney involved in transactions involving the procurement, license or sale of computer software must develop at least a basic knowledge of the legal issues relevant to open source software and open source software licensing. Jason Haislmaier, a partner with the law firm of Holme Roberts & Owen LLP and the author of the ThinkingOpen blog (www.thinkingopen.wordpress.com), and Stormy Peters, Director of Community and Partner Programs at OpenLogic and co-founder of the GNOME open source foundation, provide an introduction to open source software and a discussion of how corporate counsel can equip themselves to deal with the issues posed by open source software licensing.
