The use of open source software has become ubiquitous within most enterprises. Any attorney involved in transactions involving the procurement, license or sale of computer software must develop at least a basic knowledge of the legal issues relevant to open source software and open source software licensing. Jason Haislmaier, a partner with the law firm of Holme Roberts & Owen LLP and the author of the ThinkingOpen blog (www.thinkingopen.wordpress.com), and Stormy Peters, Director of Community and Partner Programs at OpenLogic and co-founder of the GNOME open source foundation, provide an introduction to open source software and a discussion of how corporate counsel can equip themselves to deal with the issues posed by open source software licensing. Jason D. Haislmaier, Esq. is a partner in the Boulder, CO office of Holme Roberts & Owen LLP, where he concentrates his practice on representing emerging and established companies in technology and intellectual property transactions, with an emphasis on developing strategies for protecting, managing, and commercializing technology and intellectual property assets. Mr. Haislmaier is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder School of Law, where he has taught Intellectual Property and Technology Contracting Law and Copyright Law. Stormy Peters is Director of Community and Partner Programs at OpenLogic. Previously, she founded and managed the Open Source Program Office at Hewlett-Packard (HP), where, as an early adopter of open source, she was responsible for HP\'s open source strategy, policy and business practices. She was also a founding member of HP\'s Linux Division. A frequent speaker on open source software at major conferences, Ms. Peters has addressed the United Nations, European Union and various U.S. state governments on open source software. She is a co-founder of the non-profit GNOME Foundation, which is based on open source principles to encourage the development of a computing platform, comprised of free software, for use by the general public.
